Every year, the weeks before school starts seem to fly by. Between shopping for supplies, adjusting sleep schedules, and helping your child feel ready for a new classroom, it can quickly become overwhelming.
I’ve learned that preparing for school isn’t just about buying notebooks and backpacks. It’s also about helping kids feel confident, creating routines again, and making those first few weeks a little less stressful for the whole family.
Since Brayden doesn’t start school until September, we have a little extra time to prepare. Instead of trying to do everything at once, we tackle one small task at a time throughout the summer. By the time the first day arrives, we both feel much more prepared.
Here are the simple things our family does every year.
Start With a Back-to-School Checklist
There are so many things to remember before school begins that it’s easy to overlook something important.
Our checklist usually includes:
School supplies
Lunch supplies
Snacks and pantry items
Clothes
Shoes
Haircuts
Any classroom forms
Having everything written down helps me spread purchases out over several weeks instead of feeling rushed at the last minute.

Get Reusable School Lunch Supplies Ready

If you're reusing lunch supplies from last year, wash everything and make sure it's ready for the new school year.
Because we have limited storage, I pack our lunch supplies away for the summer. Before school starts, I clean and organize our bento box, reusable water bottle, lunch bag, and containers so they're ready for busy mornings.
During the school year, I hand wash everything each afternoon and let it dry overnight so it's ready to pack again the next day.

Stock Up on Lunch Favorites Early
You can't buy everything before school starts, but pantry staples are easy to purchase throughout the summer when you find a good sale.
I usually stock up on juice, crackers, chips, fruit snacks, and granola bars. If Brayden has a favorite snack, I'll often check warehouse clubs, where buying in bulk can help us save money over the school year.
I also try to tuck those snacks away where Brayden won't find them—otherwise they'll disappear long before the first day of school! If your kids are anything like mine, they'll happily snack their way through your back-to-school stash.
Ease Back Into School Routines
One of the biggest adjustments after summer is getting everyone back on a schedule.
About two weeks before school starts, we begin moving bedtime earlier so mornings aren’t such a shock.
We also return to our school-year bath routine.
During the summer, showers happen whenever we get home from the pool, lake, or a busy day outside. Once school starts, Brayden takes his bath at night. He’s definitely not a morning person, so getting that done before bed makes mornings much smoother.

Check Fall Clothes Before School Starts

We don't buy a whole new wardrobe every year. Before school starts, I go through Brayden's fall clothes to check what still fits, replace worn-out shoes, and make a list of anything he needs. Starting early gives me time to watch for sales instead of rushing into full-price purchases.
Even though September is still warm here, cool mornings at the bus stop often call for a lightweight jacket or zip-up sweatshirt.
Refresh Academic Skills

A little review before school can help kids feel more confident. We practice reading, math, writing, and language skills, but I try to keep learning fun and low-pressure.
Instead of worksheets every day, I work learning into our routine. At the pool, Brayden counts how many fingers I'm holding up while he's underwater. I'll ask him to find something that starts with a certain letter or read words from grocery ads and food packaging. Most of the time, he doesn't even realize he's practicing.
A few minutes here and there helps keep skills fresh while making learning feel like play.
Set Small Goals That Build Confidence
Every child has different skills they’re working on.
Last year, Brayden’s teacher told us she wanted him to build more confidence, so that’s been one of our goals this summer.
We’re also practicing tying his shoes so he’ll be a little more independent during the school day.
Setting small, achievable goals helps children see their own progress, and that confidence often carries over into the classroom.
Talk About Going Back to School

Preparing kids emotionally is just as important as preparing their backpacks.
As school gets closer, I ask Brayden questions like:
What are you excited about?
Is there anything you’re nervous about?
What are you looking forward to this year?
These conversations give him a chance to share worries before the first day arrives.
Use Happy Memories to Ease Anxiety
Brayden can be anxious about starting a new school year.
One thing that has really helped is looking through photos from previous school years.
Last year, before kindergarten started, we looked back at pictures from Pre-K. He could see himself smiling, playing with friends, and enjoying time with his teachers.
Those pictures reminded him that even though something new can feel scary at first, he has done it before—and he ended up happy.
This year we’ll do the same thing with his kindergarten pictures before he starts first grade.
Sometimes children just need a reminder that they’ve successfully handled new experiences before.

Remember That Everything Doesn’t Have to Be New

One thing we’ve learned is that there’s no need to replace everything every year.
Most of Brayden’s supplies are still in great condition, so we reuse what we already have.
If there’s something he’d like to replace—maybe a water bottle, backpack, or lunch box—we talk about it together before buying anything new.
It saves money, reduces waste, and teaches him to appreciate the things he already owns.
